RICHARD JOHNSON continues his impressive run of form at the start of the new jump racing season. Good news too for another jockey with Herefordshire links. Grand National hero Liam Treadwell is also doing well in the early exchanges of the 2009/10 campaign. Neither was in the winner's enclosure at the opening fixture of the season at Hereford Racecourse. The plaudits instead went to Welsh-based trainer Rebecca Curtis who saddled two winners despite traffic congestion on the way from Pembrokeshire delaying the arrival of her horses. Two Herefordshire ‘Richards' created an unusual not only across the card - but also across the codes - double on May Day. Richard Price's Taurus Twins was a winner all the way north at Musselburgh outside Edinburgh on the Flat, while Richard Lee's Cursum Perficio was victorious a little closer to home over the jumps at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. The biggest racing day of 2009 at Hereford Racecourse - a real highlight in the Herefordshire social calendar - is Ladies' Day on Sunday 21 June. Gentlemen are, of course, welcome too! Visitors can enjoy a glass of Champagne or summer Pimms while browsing in the shopping village, which is sponsored by Wye Valley Life magazine. There are competitions for the best-dressed racegoer and the best hat, so visitors are encouraged to dress to impress. Tickets can be bought online now at www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk. With that being the only racing fixture between now and September, my column takes its annual break until the autumn. Enjoy the summer, and see you on Ladies' Day. *The next fixture at Hereford Racecourse is Ladies' Day on Sunday 21 June. Grandstand admission is £17. Accompanied children aged under 16 enter free of charge. For more information telephone the racecourse on 01432 273560.
