THE abandonment of recent horse racing fixtures due to the wintry weather across Britain has led to a bonus for jump racing fans at Hereford Racecourse. We've been awarded an extra weekend meeting this month, meaning there will be racing on both Sunday 8th and Sunday 15th. Although everyone involved in horse racing is frustrated by the disruption to fixtures caused by the wintry weather last month, we're delighted at Hereford Racecourse that we can step into the breach. The racecourse increased its average attendances in 2008 - one of only a few in Britain to do so - and we'll endeavour to offer two enjoyable family days out over the next two weekends. First up this Sunday is the racecourse's ‘winter warmer raceday'. The races include the ‘marathon' County of Herefordshire Handicap Chase, run over just a furlong short of four miles. It was another good weekend just past for Venetia Williams's yard, with two winners in Chief Yeoman and Lorient Express at the principal meeting at Sandown Park. Stablemate Mon Mome is currently a 12-1 shot with the race sponsors for another major staying steeplechase - the Blue Square Gold Cup at Haydock Park a week on Saturday. The King's Caple yard wasn't the only Herefordshire stable enjoying success in recent days. Mister Potter won his first steeplechase for trainer Richard Lee at Towcester, while Convince triumphed on the all-weather surface at Kempton Park for Kevin Prendergast. *The first race on Sunday 8 February is scheduled for 1.50pm, with the finale at 4.55pm. Grandstand admission is £17. Accompanied children aged under 16 enter free of charge. An all-inclusive winter warmer £20 ticket includes entry to the grandstand, a glass of mulled wine or pint of beer, cider or lager, a hot pie or pasty, and a raceday programme. For more information telephone the racecourse on 01432 273560.
